A Tennessee Dog became Oldest Living Golden Retriever in History after Celebrating Her 20th Birthday. She has lived with a couple in Oakland, Tennessee since age 14.
Owned by Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt, August, now the oldest Golden Retriever in History, has been living with the couple in Oakland, Tennessee since she was 14. Under the couples care, she has managed to live twice as long as other dogs of her breed.
August, affectionately known as Augie, turned 20 on April 24th. She celebrated her birthday with a dog-friendly carrot cake. Her birthday was also attended by the couples other dogs named Sherman, Belle, and Bruce. “She had a dog-friendly carrot cake, the interior of the house was completely decorated,” said Jennifer.
The GoldHeart Golden Retrievers Rescue in Maryland confirmed the authenticity of the historic news. According to GoldHeart Rescue in Tennessee, Golden Retrievers have been reported to live as long as 17 and 18 years, but Augies case is special.
Augie is known as quite the outlier, since dogs of her popular breed usually live up to 12 years only. “There are many accounts of 17 or 18 year old Golden Retrievers, but only a few stories of 19 year old Goldens. But Augie is the first Golden Retriever to ever reach the big two-oh,” wrote dog blog GoldHeart which ran Augies touching story.
Augie was born in 2000. She was rehomed twice before she got adopted by the couple at the age of 14. The couple got her from a golden retriever rescue organization in South Nevada, where Jennifer Hetterscheidt worked as an intake director. The couple also have other dogs and cats, and have taken Augie on various trips across the country.
However with coming age, Augie has become shaky. But the couple says she still enjoys her daily walks. She is given SQ Fluid twice a week along with necessary supplements. She eat eats a mix of wet and dry Hill’s Prescription Diet due to a kidney issue which started at age of 14.
